Welcome to my world — the world of philosophy as expressed through writing. Here you will find information on books written, books weighing in the balance of publishing, and books yet to be written and published. We begin with 22: Cairns of Illumination — A Journey into the Authentic Self.
While 22 is not the first book I've written, it is the first book I intend to publish. In fact, 22 is the first in a trilogy of books: 22 is a guidebook with tools to discover and manifest freedom, peace, and power in this world and this life; Caught: Between this World and the Next — Building Bridges between the Now and the Eternal is a guidebook with tools to bridge this world and this life with the next world and the eternal life; and Quark is a novel that represents the concepts found in both 22 and Caught. Finally, I am also in the process of writing a book entitled: The Truth Doesn't Hurt — Illusions Do. This book will be published shortly after 22.
This book provides a framework for those seeking to achieve clarity, peace, and freedom in this often confusing and daunting enterprise called life. I began work on this book in 2005, with the intention of working through and ultimately articulating some of life's most challenging concepts as they relate to living powerfully in the modern world, while still honoring our intrinsic spiritual and soulful nature — a central theme in my work as a luminary life coach and spiritual sherpa, and in all of my writing. As such, this book speaks to every-day people facing real-world issues, and it also aims to be a personal resource for professionals working with every-day people.
The concepts and philosophies in this book are not presented as "the truth," but rather they are intended to provoke thought, contemplation, and ideally discussion — with the ultimate aim of enhancing and indeed achieving personal awareness and awakeness. In any case, true to the ways of a philosopher, I am wary of those proclaiming the truth: for I do not believe that real truth can be written or spoken, much less taught or told; but rather it must be personally gained for it to have any real significance in our lives — which is to say, a source of personal transformation, which is where all transformation begins. And yet, we must begin somewhere, eh?
But what if you're not interested in merely adopting the words, language, conversations, and corresponding reality that have come before — say from your parents? I understand. That is one of the intended purposes of this book: to create a new language and conversation such that a new reality might exist. And what of this new reality, you rightly ask? In essence, it's a reality based in the supposition that we are first and foremost, in the beginning and in the end, always and eternally conscious/awake beings sourced by The Creator — whomever and whatever that may be — and there exists in each of us all the tools needed to access and thus experience the perfection of The Creation known as Life.
It happens that we have access to these tools through language — concepts that are delineated through words, which I refer to as Cairns of Illumination. While it is human nature to at first attempt to "understand" and "comprehend" concepts cognitively/intellectually, it's my assertion that the human cognitive mind works in complete accordance with the ego/identity complex, for the purpose of survival in this world — to the best of my research, a rather radical theory that I will be introducing in this book. Thus, in order to truly understand and comprehend, we must at some point transcend the limitations of the cognitive mind and bring these concepts to the level of awareness/awakeness, or "knowing" on an ontological level — the level of existence, or being.
This is perhaps why many of the early readers of this book have read it multiple times: at first with perhaps some perplexity; yet each time gaining deeper and deeper understanding into the delicate complexity and irony — which in the end is really quite simple and elegant — of these concepts, until such time they simply became aware of their meaning, at least as they relate to their own lives. It's for this reason that I have included numerous anecdotal, sometimes personal, stories — to aid in the emotional aspect of comprehension and understanding, as a gateway to awareness and awakeness.
I admit that the writing of much of the actual content of this book came quite easily — no doubt a stream of consciousness flowing from a clear and powerful source well beyond the constructs and constraints of my cognitive mind. However, given the simultaneously autonomous, synergistic, interwoven, and inter-dependent nature of the 22 Cairns of Illumination, structuring them did not come quite as easily. Indeed, structuring them into a coherent framework whereby the reader might leverage the previous cairns to better comprehend and use the cairn being read was one of the greatest intellectual exercises of my life; as it included the classic chicken-and-egg debate — but with many chickens and many eggs!
For those who are unfamiliar, cairns are generally piles of rocks that have been used by man throughout time and for numerous purposes — ranging from landmarks and guideposts on pathways to ceremonial tombs and astronomical alignments. And whereas any of these purposes are applicable in the context of this book, I refer to Cairns of Illumination specifically as lighted markers and milestones to aid and encourage people on their ascent up the personal and spiritual mountain of life or on their journey through the tunnel of darkness and into the ultimate light — the Authentic Self and God, which I assert in many ways is one in the same, and the subject of the final chapter.
Many of the principles and philosophies that shape the 22 Cairns of Illumination are based in the following: Eastern philosophy — Taoism and Tao Te Ching, Buddhism and The Dhammapada, Hinduism and The Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita, and Tibetan Buddhism and The Tibetan Book of the Dead; the mystical and dare I say "spiritual" side of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity — not limited to Judaism's Kabbalah and Dead Sea Scrolls, Islam's Sufi poet Rumi, and Christian biblical apocrypha (books not canonized in the Bible, such as The Gnostics); and quantum physics and quantum mechanics — a field I have been astutely following and studying for over 10 years.
This said, I reiterate my conviction that wisdom and any insight into "truth" must be personally gained in order to be truly understood — or on an ontological level, known. Thus, all of the philosophies, world views, and concepts as they're written in this book — while affirmed by various and disparate theological and philosophical sources — are indeed the product of six years of human development and awareness training and coursework, more than ten years of working with people/clients as a luminary life coach and spiritual sherpa, tens of thousands of hours spent in meditation and contemplation, and more than forty years of a densely rich life experience.
I'd like to acknowledge and give sincere thanks to those individuals who have remained steadfast in my life, and who have served as anchors in my existence in this world: my mother, Sheila; my brother, Sam; my step-father, Tony; my life mentor and guru, Barbara; and my dearest of all friends, Richard. I'd also like to acknowledge and give sincere thanks to those individuals who have taught me so much: Vara and Antoinette; my father, Charlie; Tara; Jesus Christ; Lao Tzu; Edgar Cayce; Landmark Education; and all those with whom I've had the honor and privilege of working with in a coach/sherpa-client partnership.
We're born, and we do not yet know who "we" are — apart from how healthy our bodies may or may not be. From where we came, we do not know — apart from our father's sperm and our mother's egg. For what purpose we are here, we do not know. And what happens next to us, after "we" die? The Buddhist and Taoist among us would suggest that we were all born perfect — enlightened. There is no "I" as yet, and thus "we" do not distinguish ourselves from anything around us — we are one with everything, and everything is but a present-moment experience, passing from one moment and one experience to the next, without time or language for context. "We" cry as a biological response to hunger. "We" poop, yet we do not turn away from its smell or texture. "We" simply exist — "we" are being; "we" be.
And "we" do exist — do we not? Certainly our bodies and minds exist, and according to most, our souls and spirits are in there somewhere as well. Isn't that who "we" are in the end anyhow — our souls and spirits, and perhaps our life experience, which we somehow take with us? I mean our bodies get left behind for the bugs to eat, do they not? That's not who "we" are, is it? Unsatisfied, "we" take to figuring out who "we" are. And inherent in that first conscious thought, when the synapses of the brain join forces with the sounds and gestures we've been observing for months without judgment, the earliest form of cognitive language is born. And with cognitive language — likely some baby version of "oh shit, what the heck is this?!" — the ego is born; and from the ego, eventually an identity. Finally, "we" arrive on the scene. "We" are now ready to get out of those smelly diapers and stop our whining.
Now of course the trade-off for gaining this faculty called language, which is required for "us" to figure out and clearly define who "we" are, is that we lose our enlightened way of being — so long as you're listening to those Buddhists and Taoists. But if "we" are no longer simply existing and being, then what are "we" doing? Oh well, there's nothing any of "us" can do about that anyway. It is after all inevitable, right? We need cognitive language in order to survive and make it in this world — do we not?
Our ancestors certainly seemed to think so — since they painstakingly documented every experience they could in order to teach us, prepare us, and pass along their great wisdom in what are now the annals of history. Likewise, our parents certainly seem to think so — since "they" devote their lives to teaching us everything "they" know, dismissing that which makes no sense or is of no use to "them" — based on what "they" were told and taught, along with a lifetime of experience in a cognitive state of consciousness.
Wait a minute! "They" are teaching "us?"
So, "we" take our genetic predispositions, add the value and belief systems that were placed on us by the age of 5 or so, and along with all of that knowledge — since our parents and ancestors certainly knew who "they" were by the ages of 70, 80, and 90 — we're set to face the big, bad world, and succeed! But crap, "I" wasn't prepared for that, or that, or that! "I" need to become this, so that that never happens to "me" again! Ooh, that looks nice! How do "I" get that? Let "me" do this, so that maybe "I" can get that? Man, "I" will never do that again! And as the years go by, "we" set about our days looking for this, getting that, avoiding that, and chasing this and that — and working, and sleeping, and eating, and having sex. And then "we" die. Wait a minute! That wasn't the life "I" had in mind! Sorry, you're time is up! Now what? Well, "we" don't know that either — do we?
Who are "we" again? Where did "we" come from again? Why are "we" here again? And where are "we" going again?
Now "I" understand why life is so difficult — "we" don't know any of the really important things, do "we?" Or do we?
Aware of it or not, many people spend much of their lives in the tunnel of darkness — be it in the form of abuse, fear, doubt, cynicism, confusion, insecurity, shame, guilt, regret, self-loathing, self-deprecation, self-mutilation, self-criticism, self-sabotage, blind arrogance and narcissism, false pride, lust and greed, manipulation and control, ingratitude, anger and rage, apathy, lying and deceit, negativity, unnecessary drama, hopelessness, addiction, depression, or a whole range of mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health issues. Likewise, many of these issues present themselves as significant barriers on our ascent up the personal and spiritual mountain of life.
Add these barriers to the fact that we are often blind to our own workings — actually, these barriers are the reason we are blind to our own workings — it's easy to find ourselves trapped in the tunnel of darkness without any sign of light to gravitate toward, or stuck on our ascent up the mountain of life without adequate energy or resources to overcome the obstacles. But there are illuminated markers that can help guide the way until such time that we reach the ultimate light — God's light, love, levity, and grace as expressed through our Authentic Self. Shall we begin the journey?
This book seeks to explore and address questions relating to human sexuality — in particular, same-sex attraction (SSA) as a consequence of a myriad of factors, to include most notably forced sexual contact by a member of the same sex, typically prior to sexual maturity. Same sex attraction, or SSA, is not how it sounds or appears — it is distinct from homosexuality in that the individual is "attracted" to members of same sex for reasons other than naturally-occurring or birth-given homosexuality. This of course is a source of considerable confusion and shame for an individual with SSA, and for reasons that will be explained, SSA is a difficult issue to fully unravel and address.
